ESPs have always experienced a high incidence of mechanical or electrical failure. Although manufacturers have succeeded in extending runlife, the fact is that operators still experience infant mortalities and may also have systems that run several years. In downhole conditions, failures remain both inevitable and unpredictable. Lift performance can also be affected by pump inefficiencies resulting from unforeseeable changes in reservoir conditions and fluid composition.
Improving ESP runlife is therefore not the whole solution to maximising the benefit of ESPs in high value wells. Longer runlife combined with expedient ESP retrieval and replacement maximises well uptime; completely eliminates the requirement for a workover and dramatically reduces operating expenditure and associated HSE impact.
